Behind the scenes at Eagle Field

No doubt you have not heard my ramblings about Eagle Field and the great drag racing.  There is a little more out there than just what is on the flyer.  This whole place is like a time capsule with various items strewn around the compound to look at.  There are several signs in some places that warn "No Trespassing".  I will not admit to taking these photos, nor where I got them, or even whether I was there, at the time.  Those that may or may not be my alibis, remember.... Snitches get Stitches...

The Way It Should Be Done....

No big secret that I am a HUGE fan of a Ford produced OHV engine that was mass produced BEFORE the small block Chevrolet, that everyone adores, except myself.  I am used to the ridicule of those diehard bowtie freaks that think I am crazy to put Y-block Fords in my vehicles.  I have also made a ton of money off of those people who threw away these motors and parts, then called me 5 years later looking for this stuff, because they want to be kool like me....  If people like me had an organization or cult for this following, this guy would be our leader.... 

He is the "go to" guy when it comes to making horsepower out of one these so called "boat anchors".  Known on many social groups as "Y-Block Guy", Tim Mc Master has been building and racing these motors for quite some time.  I recently was able to catch up with him a little at Eagle Field.  He came equipped with his slingshot Y-block dragster being towed by his equally impressive Y-block powered Ford longbed.  This truck is a strong runner in itself, with a motor that beats any of mine, and it is his tow vehicle.  Also, he enlisted a buddy Todd Jolliff, with his beautiful 56 T-bird, with long tube headers and a some what stock, (with a sweet exhaust note) 3 pot Y-block in it as a tow car for the return road.  He also brought 2 very lovely back-up girls, to assist with getting the car back in the groove. 

Eagle Field....

I think I have stumbled on to a twice a year ritual for me..  I love the fact this event is so low key and doesn't result in a stress meltdown just to get in and set up.  My dad, my buddy Jason, and I piled in my Magnum wagon on Saturday morning around 2 A.M.  My plan was to leave early enough to be there when the gates opened.  I had a plan to get my usual spectator spot right on the starting line.  We had the car loaded with EZ up's, chairs, food, and liquid refreshment.  I was also hoping, by getting there early, I could pull the car up close to our camp to unload.  The thought of carting all this crap around the race track was not appealing to me.  As it turned out, my spot was waiting for me and there was also parking right next to it.  This time, I took alternate transportation in the form of my stretched Dynocruiser, to cut down on my walking.  Heaven forbid, I actually had to walk anywhere...

EAGLE FIELD...

I have rambled on about this place, and perhaps it is getting old..  I went for the first time a couple months back, and will never miss another.  For most of my life, I have attended countless car events.  Many of these events started on the small side and have turned into a HUGE event.  This is how I think the story of Eagle Field is going to go.  This is probably the KOOLEST low stress event I have been to in many years.  Tons of great people TONS of great cars...  I know some of the history of Eagle Field prior to the introduction of race cars, but I will let these photos tell the story.  Keep in mind, these items are NOT roped of..  You can walk right up, look close, and in most cases touch.  If this stuff doesn't give you goose bumps, you reading he wrong blog...



Mike Thompson's 32 Ford

I took a ton of photos of this 32 ford 3 window coupe at the drag strip..  This thing was about as amazing as they come.  While the car is somewhat of a fresh build, there is no hiding that the body and current paint scheme is NOT..  Although I never caught a photo with the hood up, it is powered by a 401 Nailhead, 4 speed with a Pontiac rearend.  The announcer at the strip kept calling it a DODGE coupe, probably because of the "Powered by Dodge" on the hood sides.  This thing was an animal out of the hole...

As most know, my dad and I have a 65 Comet AWB B/FX style car going together.  I was able to speak at length to the fellow with that straight axle Fairlane in the background.  Watching and hearing that 64 leave at upwards of 7 grand, pedaling it at every shift to keep it hooked was what I think heaven might be.   That car will be featured here soon....
